So what is POCUS. It is taking the machine and clinician to the patient in the context of clinical care. It is not intended to replace consultants, such as radiologists and cardiologists. Really designed to answer binary questions (“yes” or “no”). Often it is combined with other exams, such as heart and abdomen. On the right is an ultrasound algorithm in which a clinician sees a patient and the orders and ultrasound and then that patient may be whisked off to a Sonographer and Radiologist/Cardiologist and with each degree of separation, information is lost. What POCUS can do is bridge the degrees of separation and put the patient in contact with the clinician.
